there were so many different iterations of YA books with a love triangle in it, twilight, mortal instruments, fallen, divergent, hunger games, and i find it a shame that absolutely none of them had the idea for one of the love interests to be a girl like the protagonist. it’d be way more compelling if the two love interests were a little more different besides just “this is a boy with light hair, this is a Dark And Mysterious Boy with black hair, both of them are white and super muscular and heterosexual.” maybe the mc didn’t even know she could like girls at first, so she has to untangle the fact that she has a crush on both a guy and a girl and doesn’t know what to do about it. and CRUCIALLY: why not have the love triangle end in a polycule instead of yet another “i can only have one π” ending. i get most people are monogamous but come on, not one single story ever thought to have it end with them all getting together? womp womp
you can tell that my baby queer self read a lot of YA because the hunger games was Actually Good + some of them had gay characters and i was desperate for anything i could get. you can also tell i am extremely bitter from Various Tropes i had to pretend to be invested in so i could drag myself through yet another iteration of The Same Damn Story. the hunger games was the only real one i’m sorry
also of course the lesbian button: girl trapped in a love triangle with two guys pining for her. plot twist she realizes she’s a lesbian and runs off into the sunset with the evil villain girl instead. would kill for this
